In beginning a new school year, we have set goals for the professional growth of all staff, as well as the academic achievement of our students. We will be focusing our instruction on the following goal: All students will demonstrate growth in Reading Fluency, Comprehension, Writing and Math Computation. Current student achievement data indicates our need to focus on these areas.
Meeting this goal requires us to make decisions that will have the greatest impact on student learning. One of these decisions is to suspend the instruction of Spanish for the remainder of the school year (currently, each class attends Spanish for a half hour per week). Our Spanish teacher will work as an interventionist to support students in developing their literacy skills. This will provide teachers with an additional half hour per week in which they can focus on reading, writing and math skills. We do believe, as does I.B., that learning a second language is a valuable skill. Those students who are interested in pursuing Spanish may sign-up for an after school Spanish Club that will meet for one hour per week after school. Please look for an Interest Form that will be sent home soon.
Our energy is aimed at ensuring that all of our students have a solid academic foundation--one on which they can build upon in middle school, high school and beyond. It is critical that we provide support to all of our students--in achieving and surpassing grade level expectations.
We are excited for the journey that we will travel together this year. Thank you for traveling with us, and for supporting your children and their teachers.
