Needham News May 18th, 2020

The Final Instructional Week:

The final instructional week for students begins on Wednesday, May 27th and will end on Tuesday, June 2nd.  During the final week, many grade levels will be providing students and families with time to complete previously assigned work, and optional additional learning for students who are caught up.  Teachers will continue to be available during this time to Zoom and support students and families with help on assignments or answer questions.

4th Quarter Reporting on Learning:

At the elementary level, teachers will be generating report cards based on the learning students have shown during home-based instruction.  If this is causing additional stress or pressure in your household, please take a deep breath.  We want to honor the individual work that students were able to achieve and recognize that families had very different circumstances that they were experiencing during this time.  Some areas may be reported as N/A (not assessed) based on the amount of work completed in a given area. Grades reported as “Not Assessed” will not impact a student’s ability to move on to the next grade level.  Students will not be retained due to circumstances outside of their control.

End of Year Pick-up of Personal & Classroom Items:

Next week, we will host opportunities for you to pick-up your child(ren)’s personal/classroom items.  Teachers are currently bagging up student materials and items that were left in classrooms (pencil boxes, student work, artwork, snow clothes, etc.).  In order to pick-up items, we would ask that you come to Needham on the designated days & times below.  Item pick-up is not mandatory, and we ask that you and your family take the precautions you are most comfortable with.

For item pick-up on campus, we would ask that you adhere to the social distancing guidelines of remaining 6 feet apart and wearing a face covering if it’s medically possible to do so.  Please also send one person to pick-up items and limit bringing students with you, unless necessary.  We know it can be very tempting for kids to not stay distanced from each other and the playgrounds remained closed.

Please Drop-off Library Books:

If you could please look around your home and return library books, it would be greatly appreciated!  There is a library book return bin outside of Needham daily, from 8am-1pm.  You can also return library books if you come to the school to pick-up personal/classroom items next week. If your child(ren) has a book in their desk or classroom, the teacher will return that book to Ms. Ann in the library.  Thank you for your help with this!

End of year events:

In consultation with local health and safety agencies, it has been decided that 9-R elementary schools will not be able to conduct any type of goodbye parades or drive throughs. While this is unfortunate, we continue to be mindful of our role in supporting our community health priorities and actions. Some day, we will be back to in-person learning and it will be a wonderful thing.
