Miller Band at Needham
We have the privilege of hearing the Miller band play at our school next Friday. They will be playing different holiday songs for a few different grades of students. If you have a student in 5th grade who is interested in band next year, this is a great opportunity to talk to them about band, and for them to see what a performance looks like.

Lego League Update
That's a wrap! Lego League was a blast this year! The Needham teams put their heads together to build cars, snowmobiles, windmills, Ferris wheels, helicopters, and more--and then powered and programmed them to run on their own! We learned about the world's electrical network, renewable energy, coding, teamwork, and the importance of snacks to our building brains! The four Needham Lego League coaches would like to thank all the kids who did a fantastic job of participating, sharing, and creating. We saw so many great examples of kids helping each other and working together.
What is Bullying and What is Peer Conflict? An Informational Blurb
A part of the job of a school principal is to investigate conflict between students, help resolve issues, and, at times, determine what consequences make sense given particular circumstances. It is my goal to proactively work with students and families in order to solve any peer conflicts students may be having at school. I want students to feel safe so that they can learn and grow. At Needham, we are a community of learners who are empathetic and kind. Like in any social environment, conflict sometimes arises. Our team is reflective, responsive, and thorough in making sure students can resolve issues and move forward. I say all this because I sometimes hear the word “bullying” being used by families who are reporting peer conflict. While we recognize that conflict will sometimes take place, we work incredibly hard to foster positive culture at Needham and, through our behavior data, student perception data, and parent survey data, can confidently say that there is no systemic bullying taking place at our school. This is a link to an informational page regarding what is, and is not, bullying. The two key elements to consider when asking whether a student interaction was a peer conflict or was bullying are talked about in this article. Bullying has two key features. It includes an imbalance of power (social, physical, intellectual) and it is repeated over time. Bullying is also aggressive. Because we are proactive in addressing behaviors, conflict almost never reaches the level of what would be considered bullying. If you are speaking to your child about an issue they may be experiencing at school, please make sure to consider these elements in your discussion and reporting. Having a clear understanding of what is actually taking place helps our team with reaching resolutions and empowers students for future problem solving. Thank you for your partnership!
Needham Giving Tree
We are continuing to collect non-perishable goods to donate to the Food Bank. We will collect items until 12/14. You can have your kids bring in items and put them under the tree in the entry. Banda Miller en Needham

Actualización de Lego League
¡Eso es un final! ¡Lego League fue genial este año! Los equipos de Needham se unieron para construir autos, motos de nieve, molinos de viento, ruedas de la fortuna, helicópteros y más, ¡y luego los impulsaron y programaron para que funcionen solos! ¡Aprendimos sobre la red eléctrica mundial, la energía renovable, la codificación, el trabajo en equipo y la importancia de los refrigerios para nuestros cerebros de construcción!
